What is a tower crane

To explain more thoroughly, a tower crane is a machine equipped with hoist ropes, chains, or pulleys that is used to lower, lift, and move heavy or bulk building materials.
The work of a tower crane is essential. Without it, we wouldn't be able to build the magnificent buildings and structures we have grown to love. With tower cranes, we can build large buildings and landmarks in a feasible and safe way. Let's take a look at the key parts of a tower crane.

 

 

Crane Accessories
Generally speaking, all tower cranes should have the same basic parts.
Concrete Pad
First, the base of the crane is fixed to a huge concrete pad using large bolts. This pad will support the crane and keep it stable.
Mast
From there, the base is connected to the mast, also known as the tower. This is the larger tower part of the crane that reaches high into the air.

Slewing Gear
The slewing gear is attached to the top of the mast. The slewing gear consists of a large ring gear and a motor that allows the crane to rotate.
Jib
Attached to the slewing gear is the boom, also known as the jib. This is the long arm that extends from the crane.

Mechanical Arm

Extending in the opposite direction from the jib is the mechanical arm. It is the shorter arm that contains the large concrete counterweight that allows the arm to remain balanced as the weight is extended along the arm.

Operator Cab

The cab is located on top of the slewing mechanism. This is where the crane professionals orchestrate the movement of materials.
